YouTube Hype: A Game-Changer for Small Creators

YouTube Hype: A Game-Changer for Small Creators

YouTube continues to grow, but most creators still struggle to stand out. Many good videos never reach new viewers, while channels with a large number of followers continue to win. This is where YouTube’s new YouTube Hype feature comes in to help small channels shine.

What Is YouTube Hype?

Hype is a new tool from YouTube made to give small and mid-size creators a better shot at getting noticed. Viewers can now “hype” a creator’s new video, which gives it special points. The more hype points a video gains, the higher it moves up on YouTube’s leaderboard.

Who Can Use Hype?

Not every channel gets Hype right now. Only creators with at least 500 and up to 500,000 subscribers can use this feature. So, if your channel is in this range, you get a fair chance to grow. Creators with many subscribers have to step aside, which allows smaller voices to be heard.

Hype is rolling out in many countries. It started in Brazil, Turkey, and Taiwan, and now it is live in India and other places too. The plan is to keep expanding to even more regions soon.

How Does Hype Work?

  • When you upload a video, for the first 7 days, viewers can hype that video.
  • A viewer gets three hypes to give each week for free. They use these on any videos from channels that are eligible.
  • The more hype a video gets, the higher it shows up on the leaderboard.
  • Videos with many points may also be highlighted on YouTube’s home page, bringing in new viewers.

Videos earn extra bonus points if the channel has fewer subscribers. For example, a creator with 1,000 subs will get more value from each hype compared to a channel with 400,000 subs. This helps even the smallest channels compete.

Where to Find the Hype Button

If you’re watching a video from a qualifying channel, you’ll see the Hype button right below the Like button. In some cases, if it’s not immediately visible, try swiping left on the comment section or tapping the three-dot menu in the top right corner. If the video is eligible, you’ll get the option to hype it with just one tap.

What Content Can Be Hyped?

Hype is only for long-form videos. Shorts, live streams (while they are live), and videos for kids are not included. The video must also follow YouTube’s rules. Age-restricted content or clickbait cannot be hyped. This keeps Hype safe for everyone.

Benefits to Creators and Viewers

  • Creators: If you get enough hype, your video can reach the leaderboard and a wider audience.
  • Viewers: Fans help their favorite new creators, and some might even earn a special badge for hyping often. This is a way for viewers to play a bigger part in helping creators grow.

Results from Beta Tests

During early trials in Turkey, Taiwan, and Brazil, Hype was a big hit. In just four weeks, users gave out over 5 million hypes across 50,000 channels. This early success shows how eager fans are to help newer creators get discovered.

What’s Next for Hype?

YouTube plans to keep updating Hype. There may be options for paid hype in some countries soon. The goal is to make it fair and fun, so new creators have a real chance to get seen.

YouTube Hype is giving upcoming creators extra support. As a viewer, you can help your favorite small channels go further. If you are a creator, this might be the chance you need to reach a bigger crowd. Watch out for the Hype button, and give new videos the boost they deserve.
