Google launches the NotebookLM app for Android and iOS

On May 19, 2025, Google launched its NotebookLM app for Android and iOS, just a day earlier than expected and right on cue for Google I/O 2025.

After being web-only since its debut in 2023, NotebookLM is finally going mobile. Now you can bring your AI research assistant with you, whether you’re flipping through notes on the train, prepping for class, or diving into documents at your favorite coffee shop. The mobile version packs all the power of the desktop experience, but in a pocket-friendly form.

What is Google NotebookLM?

NotebookLM is Google’s AI-driven research and note-taking assistant that leverages the Gemini 1.5 Pro model. Unlike standard chatbots or note apps, NotebookLM doesn’t just passively store information, it engages with your uploaded content in meaningful ways.

Users can upload Google Docs, PDFs, or paste raw text into the app. From there, NotebookLM can generate summaries, answer contextual questions, create FAQs, and even help brainstorm content, all grounded in your actual documents.

As Google describes it, “NotebookLM is grounded in your sources, so you can ask questions, get summaries, or create new content based on the information you care about.”

How Does NotebookLM Work?

NotebookLM is different from typical AI chatbots. Instead of pulling answers from the open internet, it only uses the files and text you upload.

This approach means the app avoids hallucinating false information. It responds based on verified, user-provided content, making it trustworthy for academic and professional use.

For example, if you upload three reports on climate change and ask, “What are the key differences in carbon emission policies between the U.S. and EU?”, the app will extract and compare relevant points from your files.

It gives you a concise answer supported by citations, allowing you to double-check sources and build an accurate understanding.

What’s New in the Mobile App?

The mobile version brings all the features you know and love from the desktop experience, plus several thoughtful enhancements tailored for smartphones and tablets:

  • Smart Summaries : Let the AI do the heavy lifting by giving you quick, easy-to-digest summaries of your documents. This helps you grasp key points in seconds
  • Source-Grounded Chat : Ask questions about your notes or documents and get precise answers based only on the content you’ve uploaded.
  • Audio Overviews : A fan-favorite feature, Audio Overviews lets you listen to podcast-style summaries of your notes. Perfect for learning on the go, it even supports offline playback and background listening
  • Mobile Source Integration : While browsing the web or watching a YouTube video, simply tap the Share button and send the content directly into your NotebookLM app for later analysis
  • Notebook Management : Organize and create new notebooks effortlessly, just like on your desktop, so your thoughts and research stay neatly organized
  • Dark and Light Modes : The app automatically adjusts to your phone’s theme settings, giving you a comfortable viewing experience whether it’s day or night.

How Can You Get It?

If you’re using an Android phone, you can download the NotebookLM app right now from the Google Play Store. iPhone user? It’s also available on the App Store – just make sure you’re running iOS 17 or later. For Android, you’ll need to be using version 10 or above.

Within just 24 hours of its launch, the NotebookLM app became the second most downloaded app on the iOS platform.

According to Google, the mobile version of NotebookLM brings all the essential features you’d expect – and they’re not stopping there. The company says there are even more tools and improvements coming, so the app will only get smarter and more useful over time. For more information, you can check its official blog.
